The old streets within the city walls
Within the city walls you will find the many narrow medieval streets that you can explore. We recommend that you do this early in the day so that you do not have to walk in the big crowds. You will also find a number of cafes, restaurants and tourist shops here.
The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The most famous landmark is the fully restored citadel, called La Cité de Carcassonne. The citadel is known as the finest example of a medieval city in Europe, which is almost completely preserved. It is also the largest castle of the Cathars.
